MDK 2 - The Final Stage

Level 10: The Final Stage

Kurt’s Klimax, Max Momentum, Doc Hawkins’s Housecall

You’ve sliced and diced, hacked and slashed. You’ve stealthily avoided monsters and mayhem, and invented some very cool weaponry. After nine challenging levels of MDK 2, it’s time to meet the Boss of all bosses, Zizzy Ballooba. And in this final confrontation, the folks at Bioware have made it unnecessary for you to decide who’s the “best” character for facing off against Emperor Zizzy. You get to pick whomever you’re in the mood to play: Kurt, Max, or Dr. Hawkins. Each has his own unique strengths and weaknesses but has no extraordinary advantage over old Zizzy. All three playable characters are capable of victory, and this chapter tells you how.

Level Briefing: Choose Your Hero

Level 10 is unique. You have the fun of picking any of the three characters: Max, Kurt, or Doc Hawkins. Your battle against the ultimate foe, Zizzy Ballooba, will shape up differently for each hero. Even the path to Zizzy’s inner chamber varies depending on which character is traveling it. The choice is up to you.

Each character has strengths and weaknesses. The bottom line for Kurt is his skill and stealth, in addition to some pretty decent firepower. Max, on the other hand, is all about weapons and brute force; he is what he shoots. Then there’s eccentric, crafty Doc Hawkins, who for this ultimate battle gets help from his alter ego, Mr. Hyde. Not to worry, strategies for each character lie within! Be sure you start by reading Hectic Hint 4.1, regardless of your choice.

  • Enemies:Ultra Bottrocks, Bifs, Coneheads, Sentry Guns, Inviso Grunts, Birdbrains.
  • Boss: Emperor Zizzy Ballooba
  • New Weapons/Items: None

Level 10 Strategy Contents:

It’s time to pick which character you want to take in to the final battle. Will it be Kurt, Max, or Doc Hawkins? (See Hectic Hint 4.1.)

  • Kurt’s Klimax
    • Kurt vs. Zizzzy
  • Max Momentum
    • Max vs. Zizzy
  • Doc Hawkins’s Housecall
    • The Doc vs. Zizzy

Kurt’s Klimax

  • Turn to your right and start moving along the palace wall. Eventually you’ll come to this fan.
  • Ride the fan up. Heed the writing on the wall; it says, “Make me cracked.” Shoot the wall.
  • The hole in the wall opens up and you can glide in, but be sure to glide only to the edge. There’s a Sentry Gun just inside waiting to take you out.
    • It’s very important here in Level 10 for Kurt to be patient. Don’t rush in! There are plenty of Sentry Guns and Inviso Grunts lurking, and other nasty enemies ready to make you hurt. Carefully plan your attacks and movements as you approach Zizzy’s lair.
  • In sniper mode, creep around the corner and take out the Sentry Guns that will be trained on you as soon as you become visible.
  • A pair of Inviso Grunts are also waiting, down this hallway. Use the sniper scope to find them, and then knock them out by shooting them once in their glass helmets.
  • At the next corner, look for two Inviso Grunts (hiding in the dark corner) and a Sentry Gun.
  • The next stretch of hallway has three more Sentries. Fortunately, there’s also a +25 Health at the end. Be sure to pick it up, because you can’t come back for it later!
  • This next stretch is among the toughest and most dangerous in the game. You’ll have to eliminate two Sentry Guns and locate and slay an entire pack of Inviso Grunts, so take your time and shoot accurately!
    • In this hallway, when faced with the transparent Inviso Grunts it’s best to creep in, go sniper mode, zoom in, and then shoot their heads. If you can do this, they’ll go down with one shot and never get back up. Of course, it’s hard not to argue for attacking the Sentry Guns first. It’s up to you, Kurt.
  • One more Inviso Grunt, and then you’ll come to this very nasty stretch of Sentry Guns all lined up in a nice six-pack (count ’em). You can shoot out the Sentries in sniper mode, or just make a run for it.
  • This giant room with light streaming in through the windows may be splendid, but the Birdbrain and Bifs after you here will prevent you from enjoying the view.
  • Don’t worry about taking out the enemies. Head for this door at the end of the room.
  • Follow this corridor along. You’ll come to several doors that open when you approach them.
  • Eventually you’ll run into two Birdbrains. Slay them as quickly as possible.
    • Fortunately, the pillars and nooks on both sides of the room offer excellent cover. And don’t miss the power-ups in the nooks, including a +50 Health and a Grenade, to your right and left.
  • Keep following this big hallway around to the left (it’s the only way you can go). Argh! More Birdbrains—including this one who’s almost invisible as you pass by.
  • This enemy stronghold is a serious threat, with two Birdbrains and two Ultra Bottrocks. Take them out as best you can, which in this case usually means lobbing Grenades in their general direction.
  • When you come to this room, hurry to your left and climb the long staircase that extends from the wall.
  • At the top of the staircase, leap up to this ledge and then jump across to the other ledge beside the staircase.
  • Through this door you go, and through a couple more just like it. You’re about to meet up with Zizzy Ballooba for the final showdown! (See Hectic Hint 4.1.)
  • Hectic Hint 4.1: Defeating Zizzy
Zizzy Ballooba has four basic moves. No matter which character you’re playing—Kurt Hectic, Doc Hawkins, or Max the Dog—you’ll be facing these attacks. Here’s the scoop on Zizzy’s tactics and how you can avoid them:
    • Zizzy fires Blue Square Window panes consecutively from his Trident. These can be avoided by moving quickly to the left or right after he fires them.
    • Zizzy will also shoot explosive bolts that bounce along the floor. To escape them, you’ll need to get the hang of jumping up at exactly the right time.
    • Zizzy’s most interesting ability is to hypnotize you and render you helpless. This hypnotic attack makes it very, very difficult for you to move, shoot, or do much of anything! To avoid the trance, watch for Zizzy to start wiggling his fingers, and then quickly turn away.
    • Zizzy can also suck you into his stomach (yuck). Inside, you’ll be attacked by stomach acid, which (amazingly) is able to track you!
    • To beat Zizzy Ballooba, you have to take his Health bar all the way down, by attacking him and avoiding his advances at the same time. In addition, you must destroy his internal organs (heart, liver, kidneys, and lungs). That’s not all; you’ll have to take out his eyes and brain to finish the job properly. Of course, each character goes about all of these challenges differently.
  • Avoid Zizzy’s Blue Square Window panes attacks with some nimble sidestepping.
  • If you do get caught in Zizzy’s Hypnotism attack, you’re in for a wild ride, Alice!
  • Just when you thought things couldn’t get any more weird, you end up inside Zizzy. You’ll have to destroy his internal organs to win.

Kurt vs. Zizzy

  • Keep moving and jumping to avoid Zizzy’s attacks. Grab as many of the power-ups outside the chamber as you can, and attack, attack, attack!
  • When Zizzy tries his Hypnotism attack against you (watch for wiggling fingers), simply turn around and don’t look at him—he won’t be able to get you in his grip.
  • Inside the Ballooba’s body, attack each of the organs and destroy as many as you can.
    • When you’re inside Zizzy, be aggressive and destroy the organs as quickly as possible. Zizzy will spit you out if you take too long.
  • To disable the lungs, lob a Sniper Mortar into each lung hole. You can pick up the Mortars around the perimeter of Zizzy’s chamber.
  • This hole in the floor of Zizzy’s stomach emits a rising air current. Ride it up to his brain and eyes.
  • Once you’ve destroyed the eyes and brain, Zizzy is dead and victory is yours!

Max Momentum

  • As Max, you need only run forward through this door to get inside the palace walls.
  • Run toward this big circle and it will open up for you, revealing some enemies. Pick up any weapons or goodies you see along the way, and then arm the weapons in your paws.
    • With Max, it’s all about brute force. Grab as many guns as you can, and make sure that each paw has an armed weapon. Max has a real edge in firepower, so use it.
  • Eliminate the Ultra Bottrocks and two Bifs that stand in your way. After these guys are crushed, continue on your way. There’s more work to be done.
  • You’ll eventually come to this room containing a statue and a waterfall pouring out. Proceed up the staircase to the left.
  • Jump from this ledge to the area beyond (this is the same maneuver performed by Kurt at this point). Keep going to the doorway at he other end.
  • Pass through this door and several more like it to meet up with Zizzy Ballooba! Get ready for the fight of your life. And remember that it’s a Dog Eat Dog world, so even when you get eaten, don’t give up!
top

Max vs. Zizzy

  • Max is cocky and his philosophy is simple: Fire with all your guns, all the time. As you’re shooting, be sure to avoid Zizzy’s attacks (especially the Hypnotism).
  • Max’s Atomic Jetpack is a real asset in Level 10. Not only does it make things a heckuva lot easier when you’re inside Zizzy, but it’s also handy for avoiding his attacks.
  • Inside big bad Ballooba, fly with the Atomic Jetpack into Zizzy’s brain, and blast away.
  • No mercy! Max’s success is just like Kurt’s: When Zizzy’s innards are all toasted, the game’s over!

Doc Hawkins’s Housecall

  • As you’d expect, Dr. Hawkins uses ingenuity rather than force to get through his ultimate challenge. Start by moving to your left until you come to this gray square.
  • Plant your Ladder on this square and start scaling the wall. (You did start this level with a Ladder, didn’t you?)
    • When you get to the top of the wall and drop into the outdoor passageway, arm your Atomic Toaster and Loaf. You know what to do: Conjure up some quick weaponry to throw at any enemies you may come across.
  • You’ll need to use the Ladder several more times against the wall, but eventually you’ll get over it and drop down into this long outdoor passageway. Go on down it.
  • As you move down the passageway, you’ll come across a Conehead and a Birdbrain. Cook ’em with your Atomic Toaster!
    • Make sure to use your Mr. Fizzies if your life gets low. The Doc wasn’t really built to fight these Birdbrains and Zizzy, and there’s no point in ending up dead!
  • If the Doc gets into trouble fighting the Birdbrain and Conehead, just fall back down the hallway. This will give you a chance to drink some Mr. Fizzies and replenish your Health.
  • When you’re able, continue down the passage until you reach an indoor one. Yet another Birdbrain attacks you, but the corner of this hallway provides some cover.
  • This door at the top of the staircase may look familiar to you. It’s the same spot where Max and Kurt made the jump to the ledge on the left. You’ll have to do the same, Doc.
  • Ladder up to the ledge on the left, and follow it to the blue doorway. Go on in.
  • As with Kurt and Max, Doc Hawkins has to follow these hallways around and pass through the doorways to get to the final battle with Zizzy.

The Doc vs. Zizzy

  • When you meet up with Emperor Zizzy, immediately run around the room and pick up everything you can, including the Leaf Blower and Baguettes.
  • Put the Baguettes to work on Zizzy first. Fire and then turn away fast so you don’t get caught in his deadly Hypnotism trance.
    • Doc Fluke isn’t as nimble as Kurt or Max, so be extra careful when dodging the Emporer’s assaults. Also, because the Doc only has 60 points of Health, keep a constant eye on that bar. When it gets low, administer Mr. Fizzies as necessary.
  • When the Doc gets inside Zizzy, he’ll need Mr. Hyde in order to destroy the Emperor’s organs. Let’s face it—it’s a lot of fun to turn into Hyde and kick Zizzy-butt!
  • You’ll need to haul out the Pumpernickel to zap Zizzy’s lungs, so be sure you’ve grabbed some up before you go inside.
  • Put the Leaf Blower in action in order to take care of the eyeballs. Once you’ve fried Zizzy’s internal organs, you’re a winner!
